How to register a left hand drive vehicle in the UK

Left hand drive cars, vans and minibuses are legal in the UK. If the vehicle has been imported, it has to be registered with the DVLA before it can go on UK number plates. Here is how it works in plain steps.

1. NOVA (tell HMRC it has arrived)

Every imported vehicle needs a NOVA (Notification of Vehicle Arrivals) to HMRC, and any VAT or duty due must be paid. Many of our vehicles already have NOVA and customs completed, and each listing says so.

2. Make it ready for UK roads

Headlights must be adjusted or changed so they don't dazzle oncoming traffic when driving on the left, and the speedometer must show miles per hour. A rear fog light on the correct side may also be needed.

3. MOT or approval

Older vehicles usually need a UK MOT. Newer imported vehicles may need a vehicle approval check instead. Ask us about the vehicle you're interested in and we'll tell you what it needs.

4. Apply to the DVLA

Apply for first registration with the DVLA, usually using form V55/5 (register a used vehicle for the first time) for a used imported vehicle. You send the NOVA reference, proof of identity, the MOT or approval certificate, insurance, and the registration fee and first road tax. The DVLA then issues a UK registration number and V5C logbook.
